Constraints

Due to the large population of emerging artists, I decided to limit this project's primary research to the James Black Gallery, one of the signature art galleries in Vancouver, to support local artists.

Motivation

During my undergraduate exhibition theories study, I worked with the James Black Gallery, located in the artist district of Vancouver. The experience gave me profound insights into the livelihood of artists, which also motivates me to voice and support emerging artists.

Key Research Insight

To help me gain a better insight of how could I help local artists, I conducted secondary research, interview, and survey to scope the difficulties among local artist community in Vancouver.

Secondary Research

studios were lost in Vancouver over the past decades.

of artists are seeking to find new studio space.

of artists report making less than $40,000 a year, in Vancouver, one of the most expensive city in the world.

The research indicates that local artists couldn’t afford the high cost of housing in Vancouver, which made them unable to rent a studio, forcing them to leave the city.

Primary Research

To gain a deeper insight about the demography and the traffic, and the demography, I interviewed the gallery manager, Zandi, and conduct 27 surveys.

Possible Intervention

The primary data from interviewing with the JBG manager and the potential gallery visitors helps me to ideate the possible design interventions:

  • Allowing visitors to contact the artist

  • Enhance the interaction with the artwork

  • Increasing users’ knowledge about the artists’ background

Persona

Based on the research insights, I created persona from artists’ and visitors’ perspective to help me better empathize with these targeted users.

Problem Statement

How might we help emerging artists to promote their artworks and reduce their stress of living?

User Empathy

Visitor Journey Map

To help artists finding the most effective way to promote their works, I used visitor journey map to understand the process that visitors needs to experience, further to helping to find the opportunity of where to incorporate my design proposals.

High Fidelity Prototype

01

Massive Exhibition

Holding multiple exhibitions in a limited space

Vancouver has limited space and expensive rental costs, so the app reduces the space required for artists and curators to exhibit.

02

Personalized Collection

Collect art with one click

During the exhibition, users can also collect digital artworks.

Long Lasting Exhibition time

User can revisit collected artwork any time, anywhere. As well as sharing on social media.

03

Optimize the Community

Networking with Artists Now

Buyers and hiring managers can easily contact the artists. It is possible for visitors to contact the artists directly, allowing them to get to know and understand the artist community better.

Easily communicate with artists

Both the automated artwork link and voice message makes chatting experience more efficient for users

04

AR Exhibition Experience

Immersive Gallery Experience

Users' motivation research indicates that placing AR functions increases the immersive experience for users and the interest they have in artists.

Prototype

Reflection

Throughout the process, I applied several UX research tools to gather first-hand data, then analyzed it to make the design fall apart. Users can develop a digital collection library by interacting deeply with the artist, playing with their social media, and sharing their artwork. This app may become a popular way to experience exhibitions in the art world.

As a future goal, I hope to combine technology and creativity to create meaningful interactive installations that more people can enjoy.
